JEFFERSONVILLE — Wednesday was an emotional day for Tim LaGrange. About 8 a.m., he sadly said goodbye to his players at Jasper High School. Seven hours later, LaGrange’s sorrow turned to joy as he was introduced as Jeffersonville High School’s 19th boys’ basketball coach in an afternoon press conference at the school. The Greater Clark School Corporation board approved the former Jasper coach by a 6-0 vote Wednesday morning in a special meeting.

LaGrange replaces Jimmy Just, who resigned a month ago to become the head coach at Louisville Manual High School. “This is a position that I’m honored to accept and a professional challenge that I’m prepared and excited to attack,” LaGrange said.

“As a son of a former coach and educator, basketball is in my blood and I feel like I’ve spent a lifetime preparing for this opportunity. “This is a great day for me personally. This is a great day for my family and it’s a great day to be a Red Devil.” LaGrange, 38, was picked from a pool of 24 candidates, nine of which interviewed for the position. Jeff athletic director Tony Branch, who conducted the coaching search along with JHS principal Steve Morris, said LaGrange brings a lot to the Red Devil table. “We’re very excited that we landed coach LaGrange from Jasper High School. He fits everything that we wanted in a coach — and I mean everything,” Branch said. “We have the complete package.

We think that coach LaGrange has shown stability wherever he’s been. He’s shown he is a winner in every sense of the word.” In 10 seasons at Jasper, LaGrange compiled a 125-103 record with two sectional championships, two Big 8 Conference crowns and a regional title. His best season was the 2001-02 campaign as the Wildcats went 18-8 and won the Class 3A sectional and regional crowns.

Jasper nearly reached the state championship game that season, losing in triple overtime of the Seymour Semistate to eventual state champion Delta on a last-second shot. Last year, the Wildcats were 9-12 with their biggest victory being a 38-37 win over then 4A No.

Prior to becoming the head coach, LaGrange served as an assistant at Jasper from 1994-97. He was also a freshman coach at his alma mater, Perry Central, from 1991-92 and the junior varsity coach at Hancock County High School in Lewisport, Ky., from 1992-94. LaGrange will not determine what kind of system he will put in at Jeff until he evaluates the current Red Devil players. At Jasper, he primarily used a motion offense and stressed fundamental basketball. The Wildcats averaged 52.3 points per game last season.

But his Jasper style could be subject to change once Jeff’s preseason practice begins. “Generally speaking, we were a motion team offensively,” LaGrange said. “We were a team most years that could push the basketball. A lot of the time we took the floor, we were not the better athletes on the floor, so we had to find a way to compete. There was a lot of emphasis on defense and blocking out — fundamental basketball.

I’ll carry that emphasis on fundamentals here, but I think we’ll be able to use the whole floor and to be a little more aggressive. “My style has always been take what you have and put them in the best position to be successful. I anticipate that my style from Jasper and my style at Jeffersonville will be somewhat different. I like to play as fast as a team can play, but under control. I think those kinds of athletes exist in this school corporation, so I look forward to that.” LaGrange met with his players Wednesday prior to the press conference. He plans to start working with his players today, as the Red Devils are in the middle of their summer season. LaGrange says he thinks the team is not too far behind in its summer program.

“First of all, you can schedule a lot of things in the summer. But that doesn’t guarantee you’re getting anything accomplished,” LaGrange said. “I think the key is to work smart. I think 10 years of experience will allow me to better utilize my time for the rest of the summer and work intelligently and get the most out of the time we have. “The most important thing is I need to get to know the kids and evaluate the kids, and the kids need to get to know me. We need to start developing trust in one another.” LaGrange is familiar with the rich tradition of Jeff basketball and plans on continuing that tradition.

“It’s a program for which I have tremendous respect (for),” he said. “Jeff has had great coaches, great players and great teams. It is my intention and my desire to embrace that history and that tradition, and certainly I want to maintain that excellence. I know that Jeffersonville is a community that expects success and that is one of the reasons I’m here because I have those same expectations.” Before taking the Jeff reins, LaGrange thanked Jasper High School and the entire Jasper community for their support the last several years. “I want to wish Jasper absolutely nothing but the best of luck,” LaGrange said. “I’ve had so many wonderful people who have touched our lives and our family.

I know as excited as we are right now that when we pull out of there for the last time, there are going to be some tears. You can’t live somewhere and be that involved in a community for 13 years and not fall in love with it.”.
